Tiling is unforgiving work. Every mistake stays visible for as long as the tiles do, and the ones that matter most — the substrate and the waterproofing — are invisible the moment the job is finished.

Waterproofing is the part that matters

In a wet area, tiles and grout are not the waterproof layer — the membrane underneath is. Grout is porous. If the membrane is missing or badly done, water passes through and the first sign is usually damp in the room next door or the ceiling below, long after the tiler has gone. We waterproof wet areas properly, and where we are re-tiling an existing bathroom we check what is underneath rather than tiling straight over it.

Preparation and levelling

A floor that is not level produces lipping between tiles — edges standing proud of each other. It looks wrong immediately and collects dirt. Large-format tiles are far less forgiving of this, so substrate preparation is a bigger part of the job than most people expect.

Can you tile over existing tiles?

Sometimes, and it saves both money and mess. It depends on whether the existing tiles are sound and well bonded, whether the extra height causes problems at doors and thresholds, and whether it is a wet area. We will tell you honestly whether it is a good idea for your job or a shortcut you will regret.

How long does tiling take?

A typical bathroom is several days including preparation, waterproofing and grouting, with drying time between stages that cannot be rushed. We give a realistic schedule up front — a fast tiling job is usually a bad one.

Commonly combined with painting in a refurbishment, and with plumbing where sanitary ware is being moved or replaced. Both sit under finishing work.
